Default Ileostomy for Esophageal cancer?

Why would the surgeon need to do an ileostomy during surgery for cancer of the esophagus and hernia surgery? They are being done at the same time. Would this be a temporary measure, or does it mean they had to remove portions of the colon, etc.?
