Hello. I've been told my living room walls may have asbestos in them. What is this? I've heard you can die from it! I have a crack in my living room wall due to the walls being old but we're getting that repaired. Is it dangerous for me to be in my house if we have got it? What's the chances you can die from it? How will I know if my walls have it in future?

You cannot die immediately from asbestos. It can show up many years later in the form of cancer. To settle your mind, call the EPA environmental protection agency and ask them to check this out for you.

People that have been exposed to it many years ago have eventually came down with cancer, but your walls are not in a powder or dust form. But I would still have them checked.

You cannot die from Asbestos in the walls.But the problem occurs with Asbestos dust.Asbestos was an old type of Insulating material similar to fibreglass insulation.I worked for years in a factory which had asbestos.If your house was built prior to 1950 you may have this type of insulation.If you are very worried about it, get a building inspector to check.Just make sure your walls are sealed on the outside, and over the top of walls inside roof.
