Default Should we buy a house with asbestos siding?

There is a house that we really like but it is old and has asbestos siding on it. Is this a major concern?? I know if you break them and create dust, it is very bad for your lungs. The house is selling at $99,900 but I think we could get him down to $85,000 considering the siding and the fact that the upstairs is cooled by window units. What do you think??

Would not recommend it as others have allready stated it is not only dangerous to health, but also is costly to remove. Also consider that the home may have lead based paint throughout the residence if the owner is really wanting to sell, talk him down lower than 85k it may cost upwards of 10-20K depending on size of house and any other materials to redue it. Check with area asbestos removal companies to get estimates good luck

It's a big pain in the wazoo to remove though, not as simple as taking down regular siding. Call an asbestos remover in your area to asess the possible cost of removal/disposal.

Hi there -
You don't mention what state you live in but different states have differing laws about this. In Massachusetts, if asbestos is found you must contact a professional asbestos removal company. They send out the guys in huge white suits with masks on; and it is VERY expensive. However I would get an estimate asap and add it to the total cost of the house to determine if it is still affordable to you. I hope this helps. Cathy
