Default Was asbestos commonly used in plaster walls and ceilings years ago?

I have had this recurring thought of being exposed. I tore out a ceiling in an old school house about ten years ago. There was a large duct labelled "DANGER, ASBESTOS", and I was careful not to disturb that part.

Textured ceiling used asbestos - that pop corn looking stuff. Otherwise it was used on house siding shingles and boiler pipe coatings for it's insulation and fire proofing. Short time exposure is not a given for lung damage - in fact long term is not either - but people who worked constantly in such environments have a higher rate of lung damage.

Yes it was. You need to have an ex ray to see if you have asbestosis. Mesothelioma is another condition caused by exposure to asbestos. The bad news is if you breathed asbestos it will always be in your lungs. It doesn't deteriorate.Good luck and God bless!!

Yes most of the old plastered walls and over heads had asbestos in them. All of the pipe insulation had asbestos also.

The biggest danger back then was miners exposing themselves to asbestos. A minor contact with it would not be a problem. It takes about 15 to 20 years to effect someone after exposer. I think you will be fine. Enjoy

It was used as insulation, and also because it is fire proof. As long as it goes undisturbed it should be OK.

Depends, How many years ago? Asbestos was common in hollow walls as an insulation. If the plaster wall is solid through out, it probably does not contain asbestos
