My friend has recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer which has spread to her nearby lymph node. She is about 20 something weeks pregnant. How bad is that? She is about 28.
They are waiting until the baby is born and will then have surgery followed by radio-therapy... thanks

With the cancer spreading to the lymph nodes, most likely chemotherapy with be included in the treatment plan, and these chemicals are highly toxic and very dangerous to the fetus.

I suggest asking an oncologist AND a neonatologist just how harmful chemo is to the fetus. Also, radiation may be part of the treatment plan and that should be taken into consideration as well.

she will need removal of thyroid along with lymph nodes of neck.depending on the pathological type of tumour post op radioiodine may be required.
radioiodine harms the foetus.
after thyroidectomy life long thyroxine[hormone] supplement will be needed.
the outcome of most common types---papillary and follicular cancer is good [90-95%survival].
so please go for early surgery and wait for the histo- path report.
